2. Oasis
3. Tracy Chapman
4. Goo Goo Dolls
5. REM
Examples/Proof
1. The Beatles
Song: Elanor Rigby http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/th...nor_rigby.html
The story painted off this lonely widow is why this song is here. But these men have so many songs that i could site I will only show one so please follow my example.
2. Oasis
Cast No Shadow http://www.oasisinet.com/site.php?si...&from=&boxidx=
This song keeps me thinking after I hear it. The lines in it seem so mysterious and I keep coming back to it.
Don't Look Back In Anger http://www.oasisinet.com/site.php?si...&from=&boxidx=
The lyrics in this song really stir something up which I cannot really describe.
3. Tracy Chapman
I cannot decide strongly on which song but I will use Fast Car. Here shockingly real awareness of the world and her voice both combine to make these lyrics great.
4. Goo Goo Dolls
Name http://www.lyrics007.com/Goo%20Goo%2...%20Lyrics.html
This song is great it's lyrics remind me off life so much and all their songs usually have a deeper meaning to them. Some lines from their songs just really stir up your emotions
5. REM
Losing My Religion http://www25.brinkster.com/ceremony4...0My%20Religion
Love this song and it has just a haunting sound to it and seems like something that rarely comes out of your emotional shell but thats just me.
Its The End of the World as we Know it (I feel fine) http://www.lyrics007.com/R.E.M.%20Ly...%20Lyrics.html
The awareness and trueness of these lyrics speak for itslef

Aerosmith. They have some catch songs like Love in An Elevator, but most of thier songs tell a pretty complete story. Kings & Queens, Janie's Got a Gun, Lightning Strikes, Crazy, etc.

Eminem really is great with lyrics...actually, so are most rap artists.
I'm not a fan of him, nor rap music. I just listen to it occasionally.
I really like the lyrics to Thursday's War All The Time.
Its rock, so some of you might want to pass on that.
Another song that I really like is Michael Buble's Home.
The lyrics aren't really anything to cry about, but the tune is just very fitting with the song.

I am supprised more people don't like techno because it just is rap without people talking. But as much as i hate rap it has good lyrics sometimes.

1. Bright Eyes - Conor Oberst is the most gifted song writer of modern times.
exp - And so now I try to keep up
I've been exchanging my currency
While a million objects
Pass though my periphery
Now I’m rubbin' my eyes
'Cause they're starting to bother me
I been staring too long at the screen
But where was I when I first heard
That sweet sound of humility
It came to my ears in the
Goddamned loveliest melody
How grateful I was then
To be part of the mystery
To love and to be loved
Lets just hope that is enough
2. Alkaline Trio
exp - This house is full of eyes but I can't look at anyone
They've seen this face a thousand times
Most relaxing thing I do - hang half way out a third floor window,
and look at rocks if I fall out
Well maybe I'll fall hard
Something tough to break me
Something sharp to rip into my insides and bleed out all that pain
Sorry I don't even know your name
I guess for me it's easy this way.
3. Rise Against
exp - we came in search of answers
we left empty handed again
shots fired into the sky are now returning
where the fukc will you hide?
hiding from the laughter in the closets of our lives
but the door hinges are squeaking letting in thin shards of light
and now a hands extending outward, quiet comfort they invite
do we dare take what they offer, do we step into the light?
4. The Postal Service/Death Cab for Cutie (i don't really like death cab, but its the same singer/song writer)
exp - I'll be the waterwings that save you if you
start drowning in an open tab when your
judgement's on the brink.
I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite
albums back as your lying there drifting off
to sleep.
I'll be the platform shoes and undo what
heredity's done to you: you won't have to
strain to look into my eyes.
I'll be your winter coat buttoned and zipped
straight to the throat with the collar up so
you won't catch cold.
5. Brand New
exp - In a car outside, we stalk the idle kind.
"If you're leaving, just let me know."
Tobacco and peppermint, dusting for fingerprints.
A film in her eyes from the glow.
Some rules are made with all intentions to break
and she defends it with a warped rationale.
But I've seen what happens to the wicked and proud
when they decide to try to take on the throne for the crown.
And we learn as we age.
We've learned nothing and my body still aches.
And you take cause they give.
Though I love you and my body it leaks like a sieve.

im not surprised no one has said this, because everyone i have encountered on any guild wars forum despises them, but....
i gotta say Billie Joe Armostrong of Green Day. look at the lyrics from good riddance(time of your life) for example. and whatever mood im in, i can find lyrics by him that completely relate(minority for when im mad at people, wake me up when september ends when im sad, warning when i don't care, etc...)
and i do not like rap...but i do have to say Eminem is very good with lyrics.
edit: cant believe i forgot incubus....

How do you have this list without Bob Dylan being anywhere on it? Do I even have to put down lyrical examples?
And what about the Boss? The guy sings about anything.
Let's not forget Jim Morrison either. Or Roger Waters.
Currently, I'd go with Cake. They have some really interesting and wacky lyrics. Their best work is Comfort Eagle imo.
Also, Bare Naked Ladies. Sorta-novelty band and not here cause of One Week or if I Had A Million Dollars although those are good too.
John Cougar Mellencamp is another person who writes great lyrics. Honestly, though I think his best work is behind him as far as this category.

Yah, Eminem takes the cake, followed in a close second by Lil' Wayne. Case in point:
"Okay, let's talk about this ice that I'm carying. All these karats, like I'm a f*%#ing vegetarian"
All I can say is brilliant

Greenday does have great lyrical ability and it is present in most all his songs. So do others like Morrisen (sp?) but i don't listen to the doors enough to know just how good their lyrics are. But Jack and Daine by John Mellencamp is one of those songs I can listen to for hours.

if you want lyrical talent look no further than, the beatles, elton john, queen, and supertramp... they own every other music artist old and new...
my rating system is easy, if its music from after the year 1989 it sucks (ok some 90's songs are ok, but not many).... anything before that is all good though. Another filter system i use is everything but classic rock sucks (some punk is ok, and i mean real punk not that crap on the radio)... that really helps aswell

Totally agree. The Mars Volta has some of the most insane, crazy, creative lyrics I have ever heard. One of the few bands that accually shows real emotion behind their lyrics, seeing how both their albums are dedicated to people close to them who have passed away. My favorite of their songs are Inertiatic, The Haunt of Roulette Dares, and cygnus... vismund cygnus. All of which I posted in the Favorite Lyrics Thread.

2pac - Changes
I see no changes all I see is racist faces
misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
one better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right
cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
and only time we chill is when we kill each other
it takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
well there is a long list
he's the only rapper i listen to and not really a fan of rap music.
